FreeMOL is a compilation of free and open-source programs that should eventually evolve into a framework for computational chemistry, informatics, structural biology, and visualization. The project is mainly focused on enabling facile creation of ready-to-run (and ready-to-integrate) binary distributions for Mac, Windows, and Linux.
The following components are under consideration for the future:
FreeMOL is not intended for use under packaged-managed operating systems. Indeed, it would serve no useful purpose in a package-managed environment where all of the same components can already be installed into defined locations. FreeMOL's purpose is instead to serve as an alternative route to executable code for meeting certain practical use cases (such as enabling redistributable integrations that can run well across many platform variants).
If you are a package maintainer for an open-source platform such as Linux, please do not subvert the system by creating a "freemol" package which repackages each of the various components -- to do so would be redundant, confusing, and potentially harmful.
Instead, please work within the official structures which exist (RPM, etc.) to create and maintain separate packages for the individual components which abide by the rules of your target platform. They are each independent open-source projects in their own right, most having nothing to do with FreeMOL, and should not be cloaked inside a "freemol" source package.
FreeMOL source code may be accessed via the Subversion repository. A read-only copy of the repository can be checked out as follows:
svn co svn://bioinformatics.org/svnroot/freemol/trunk freemol-trunk
Happy hacking, but do please note that our efforts are spread far to thin for us to serve as a responsive open-source "upstream" provider in the usual sense. Furthermore, it is particularly important that we do not compete with or detract from the actively-developed component projects.
Therefore, please view FreeMOL source code as an informal, unsupported, "AS IS" mechanism for quickly building and exposing a small and specific set of binary executables in a well-defined manner. If you choose to do something with the FreeMOL source code other than building standalone redistributable binaries, then you are working beyond our scope of intent and should be prepared to support and maintain the resulting software yourself (without relying upon us).
The FreeMOL compilation is under the following BSD open-source license. However, each FreeMOL component remains under its own open-source license.
